What is it?

Solid surface is a non-porous, homogeneous surface material made from acrylic/polyester resin combined with mineral filler. Because its best-known brand is Corian, it is called the 'Corian type'. Pieces are joined invisibly to create single-piece, seamless surfaces.

  • Non-porous structure: Holds no liquid or bacteria; hygienic and stain-resistant.
  • Thermoforming: Bends with heat into fluid, three-dimensional forms.
  • Seamless joints: Pieces fuse chemically; the joint is invisible.

Types & varieties

Appearance options

  • Solid colour: A matt/silky surface from white to dark tones.
  • Stone/mineral effect: Marble- and granite-look patterns.
  • Translucent: Suitable for back-lighting in thin sections.

Forming capability

Thanks to thermoforming, curved counters, reception desks, lighting elements and three-dimensional wall panels can be produced.

Use cases

The first choice for surfaces that need hygiene and a seamless look:

  • Bar, cashier and reception counters
  • Service and prep counters (with integrated sink)
  • Curved, shaped counters and display surfaces
  • Back-lit decorative panels
  • Wet-area and restroom counters

Advantages & disadvantages

Advantages

  • Seamless, single-piece look — no joints
  • Non-porous: hygienic, holds no stains or bacteria
  • Takes any form with heat (curves, 3D shapes)
  • Scratches and impacts can be repaired (renewable surface)

Points to consider

  • Less heat-resistant than natural stone (a hot pan can damage it)
  • The surface is not as hard as natural stone
  • A quality result needs expert workmanship and equipment

Care & cleaning

Daily cleaning is done with a damp cloth and soapy water. On matt surfaces stains and scratches can be removed with a white scouring pad; on gloss surfaces a manufacturer care product is used. Very hot pans should not be placed directly — use a trivet.
