A space both looking good and being used for years without wear depends largely on the right material choice. Here are the most commonly used material groups in café and store fit-out, and where they work best.
Wood and its derivatives
MDF, solid wood and laminated panels are the backbone of decoration. Solid wood gives a sense of warmth and quality, while MDF offers flexibility in furniture and cladding thanks to its paintable surface and formability. With the right lacquering, both become long-lasting.
Metal and glass
Steel, aluminium and stainless metal are used in load-bearing structures, legs and modern details. Glass and mirror visually enlarge the space and add transparency to windows and partitions. The metal-and-glass combination is indispensable to contemporary cafés and stores.
Solid surface, compact laminate and stone
On worktops and heavily used surfaces, durability is the priority. Solid-surface (Corian-type) materials offer a seamless look and easy repair; compact laminate resists moisture and impact; and natural stone, marble and quartz give a prestigious appearance.
Cladding, paint and lighting
HPL, wood and PVC claddings give surfaces different textures economically. Lacquer and varnish provide colour and protection together. LED lighting is now not just a function but design itself — in-shelf, under-counter and window lighting make the product stand out.
The durability-aesthetics balance
The most beautiful material is not the right choice if it wears quickly under heavy use. At high-traffic points such as tabletops, door edges and floors, durability should come first; at visual focal points such as windows and brand walls, aesthetics should. A good design is one that balances the two together with the budget.
