A Fit-out Guide to Opening a Café or Restaurant Abroad

3 June 2026

Opening a café or restaurant in another country is a job that requires logistics and coordination beyond design. When it is not planned well, costs and timelines grow fast. Here are the fit-out points to watch on an overseas venue project.

Differences in local dimensions and regulations

Every country's building, fire and operating regulations are different. Ceiling heights, emergency-exit requirements and ventilation rules directly affect the project. Knowing the target country's requirements before starting the design prevents costly revisions later.

Logistics and customs

Where production takes place is a critical decision. Producing the decor elements in a single workshop and shipping them is often both more economical and more controlled in quality than finding a separate supplier in each country. In that case, customs documents and transport must be planned from the start.

The convenience of modular production

Producing the space's decor as modular parts provides a major advantage on long-distance projects. The parts are packed compactly, shipped and assembled on site. This approach lowers both shipping volume and installation time.

Installation: a team, or video-guided assembly?

On distant projects it is not always necessary to send an installation team. A well-designed modular system, with numbered parts and assembly videos, can also be set up by a local team — meaning significant savings on flights, accommodation and daily expenses.

Remote project management

Regular visual reporting is important so the process moves transparently despite the physical distance: photos and videos from the production stage, comparison with 3D visuals, and a clear timeline. With the right communication, even a project on another continent can run smoothly.

Time planning

On overseas projects, shipping and customs times are added to the production time. So a realistic schedule should be built backwards from the opening date, leaving separate allowances for design approval, production, shipping and installation.
