What is it?

Natural stone (marble, granite, travertine) and quartz composite are hard, durable and prestigious materials used on worktops, bars and decorative surfaces. Natural stone offers a unique pattern in every slab; quartz is a homogeneous, lower-maintenance alternative.

  • Marble: Elegantly veined, prestigious; relatively sensitive to stains and acids.
  • Granite: A very hard natural stone, resistant to heat and scratches.
  • Quartz composite: Crushed quartz + resin; non-porous, homogeneous, low maintenance.

Types & varieties

Material groups

  • Natural stone: Marble, granite, travertine, onyx — a unique pattern.
  • Quartz (compact): Homogeneous colour/pattern, non-porous, hygienic.
  • Porcelain ceramic slab: A thin, large-format, heat- and UV-resistant alternative.

Surface finishes

Different looks are achieved with polished (gloss), honed (matt), brushed (textured) and aged finishes; edges are worked straight, chamfered or profiled.

Technical properties

HardnessHigh (very high with granite and quartz)
PorosityNatural stone is porous (needs sealing); quartz is non-porous
Heat resistanceNatural stone high; avoid hot contact on quartz
Thickness20 · 30 mm; thickened at edges by lamination
SurfacePolished, honed (matt), brushed, aged
MaintenanceNatural stone needs periodic sealing; quartz is maintenance-free

Use cases

On surfaces that need an upmarket look and durability:

  • Bar, cashier and service counters
  • Café/restaurant table tops
  • Reception and display counters
  • Decorative wall and niche cladding
  • Wet-area counters (suitable stone/quartz)

Advantages & disadvantages

Advantages

  • A timeless, prestigious and natural look
  • High durability and long life
  • Quartz: non-porous, hygienic, low maintenance
  • Every natural-stone slab offers a unique pattern

Points to consider

  • Heavy; requires a support and installation plan
  • Marble is sensitive to stains/acids (sealing required)
  • Cost and supply variability with natural stone

Care & cleaning

Natural stone is wiped with a neutral-pH cleaner; acidic liquids (lemon, vinegar, wine) must be removed immediately and the surface sealed periodically. Quartz composite is non-porous; a damp cloth and general cleaner are enough — use a trivet for very hot pans.

How we apply it at Standchi

We engineer natural-stone and quartz worktops in cooperation with trusted stone workshops, with the right thickness and edge profile. We run measurement, cutting and installation in coordination with our wood/metal carcass fabrication so the worktop sits perfectly in the space.
